Accuracy Matters

Each emulation is built by matching a digital image to a film scan. The same lens and lighting situation is maintained during the digital and film shoot to eliminate all other possible variables.

Emulation for Every Camera

Each digital camera comes with its own digital sensor and color science, making a one size fits all emulation impossible.

This is why we have profiled the most popular digital cameras and created separate emulations for each so you can get accurate film looks no matter what camera you use.

Film Scanners

A major part of a film image’s final look comes from the scanner used to process it. That’s why we’ve created two distinct emulation styles — Frontier and Noritsu — based on the two most commonly used lab scanners, each with its own unique color and contrast characteristics.

Film Emulation Methods

The Kodak and Fujifilm emulations in the Color Precision Collection are LUT-based. Unlike basic adjustment tools, LUTs allow for precise control over contrast, saturation, and hue.

These LUTs can be applied within the LUT Grading palette or through presets that automatically load the corresponding LUT. They were designed in the ProPhoto RGB colorspace to work specifically with RAW photos and are not intended for rec.709 video.

The B+W emulations are camera profiles built on a CP Calibrated profile for your camera's sensor, and each preset loads its profile automatically.

Film Grain + Halation

Using the grain palette in DxO FilmPack, these presets provide five levels of intensity for easy application.

Five presets feature chromatic grain, while five offer monochromatic grain options.

DxO FilmPack needs to be purchased in order to apply grain.

Highlight rolloff

Soft Highlight presets are included with the product to create a more natural-looking highlight rolloff by lowering the white point using a curves adjustment.

Using profiles with built-in highlight rolloff can cause highlight clipping, which may result in a loss of detail in the brightest areas.

When you apply a Color Precision profile to an image, the highlights are reduced, but the white point remains unchanged.

If the white point were lowered in the profile to imitate the smooth highlight rolloff of film, the brightest areas of the image would become clipped. As a result, true white could no longer be restored, even if you set the highlights to 100%.

Color Filters

Black and white film photographers put colored filters on the lens to control how each color turns to gray. A filter lightens colors close to its own and darkens the opposite ones.

The Color Filter presets recreate the four classic filters on top of any B+W profile:

Yellow darkens blue skies a little so clouds stand out. It is the most natural of the four.

Orange darkens skies further and smooths skin tones.

Red darkens blue skies dramatically for strong contrast, and lightens skin and red tones.

Green lightens foliage and darkens skin and red tones, bringing out texture in landscapes and portraits.

The reset preset removes the filter.
